Do I need my own tools and parts in the Self-Service Zone?

You don't need your own tools — a full set is included in the price of the bay. Parts are a different matter: you either bring your own, bought in advance, or we choose and order them together before your visit. That's the short answer to the question we hear most often before a first drive-in to the Self-Service Zone at Grabiszyńska 241. Below we go into detail: what you'll find at the bay, what is worth bringing, how to avoid ordering the wrong part and what to do with used oil.

What's included in the price of the bay?

You pay for time at the bay — and with it for all the equipment needed for typical jobs. There is no separate „tool fee” and no deposit for every spanner. You drive in, put the car on the lift and get to work.

  • The lift — a full-size 3.5 t or 5 t bay, plus a separate bay for motorcycles. The car is raised, with comfortable access from underneath.
  • Spanners and impact wrenches — a full set for routine jobs: oil, filters, brakes, wheels, smaller suspension parts.
  • Spot lighting — one of the things you miss most when working on a driveway outside a block of flats.
  • Basic diagnostic equipment — to read fault codes and quickly check what you are actually dealing with.
  • Compressed air, power and space to lay parts out — a clean, well-lit area instead of kneeling on the pavement.

What the bay itself costs

A bay with a 3.5 t lift costs 60 PLN/h, a 5 t bay 80 PLN/h and a motorcycle bay 25 PLN/h. Billing is purely hourly, with no labour charge and no hidden extras. If you come back regularly, the pass works out cheaper: 10 visits for the price of 7.

What is worth bringing yourself

The tools are on site, but a few small things are simply more convenient to have your own. These are personal items, or ones that speed the job up.

  • Work clothes and gloves — working under the car can get messy, and nobody wants to drive home covered in oil.
  • The manual or service data for your model — torque figures, oil capacity, the order of steps. A phone with the values saved is enough.
  • A head torch, if you like the light pointing exactly where you're looking.
  • A model-specific special tool — if your car needs an unusual tool (for a particular filter housing or a puller, say), call before your visit and ask whether we have one. Usually we do, but it's better to check than to lose half an hour of the time you've booked.

Ask beforehand, not on the spot

The most common waste of time in the zone isn't a lack of skill — it's a missing small part: the sump plug washer, a clip, a clamp, a bulb of a different type than you assumed. One message before your visit saves fifteen minutes at the bay.

And parts — your own or ordered by the workshop?

Here you have complete freedom, and that is exactly where the savings in a self-service workshop come from. You can arrive with your own parts, bought wherever they were cheapest — we add no mark-up to them, because you pay only for time at the bay. You can also order them with our help before the visit: we'll tell you exactly what the chosen job needs for your engine and model year.

  • You buy them yourself — you control the price and the brand. It is worth choosing parts by VIN rather than by model name alone; the same model year can have two different versions of discs or filters.
  • We choose them together — you tell us what you plan to do and we give you the list: the main part plus all the small items that are easy to forget (gaskets, single-use bolts, grease, fluid).
  • Bring spares of the small stuff — a sump plug washer, new caliper bolts or clips cost next to nothing, but not having them can bring the whole job to a halt.

If you are still wondering which jobs are worth doing yourself and which are better handed straight to a mechanic, we covered that in a separate article: which repairs you can do yourself on a lift.

What about used oil and old parts?

You leave them with us. Used oil, filters and old components go to proper legal disposal on site — one of those things you simply cannot do well in a garage or a car park. We described it step by step in the article on changing your oil: how to change your oil yourself in the Zone.

Oil does not go down the drain

Pouring used oil down a drain or onto the ground is not only environmental damage but also a real legal risk. A single litre of oil can contaminate an enormous amount of water. In the zone this is taken care of — you simply leave the drained oil and the old filters on site.

What if I get stuck halfway?

That's a normal situation, and you are not left alone with it. If a bolt is seized, something won't go back together or the symptom turns out to be different from what you expected — ask our mechanic for advice or a hand. The Zone is designed for people who want to work on their own car, not for people who have to know everything in advance. And if the job turns out to need specialist equipment — such as HUNTER wheel alignment after replacing suspension parts — we'll do it right next door, with no need to move the car anywhere else.

A short checklist before your first visit

  1. Decide on the scope — for a first visit, one specific job is plenty (oil, pads, wheels).
  2. Get the parts together by VIN, including the small items; if in doubt, ask us before the visit.
  3. Check the torque figures and fluid capacities for your model — save them on your phone.
  4. Book the bay online and choose a realistic slot: for a first oil change it is safer to take a little more than an hour.
  5. Bring work clothes and gloves — everything else, tools included, is waiting for you here.

You'll find details of the bays, the equipment and the price list on the Self-Service Zone service page, and if you plan to come back regularly, see how the „10 visits, pay for 7” pass works.

Do I have to bring my own tools to a self-service workshop?

No. The bay rental includes the lift, a full set of spanners and impact wrenches, spot lighting and basic diagnostic equipment. The only things worth bringing are work clothes and gloves — plus, for an unusual car, any model-specific special tool, which is best checked with us before the visit.

Can I bring my own parts?

Yes, and that is the most common scenario. You buy the parts wherever you like and pay us only for time at the bay — no mark-up on parts and no labour charge. You can also choose them together with us before the visit.

What if I order the wrong part?

That is exactly why we always recommend choosing parts by VIN and sending us the list to check in advance. If something still turns out not to fit once you're here, we'll suggest a replacement or move the job to your next visit.

Where do I leave used oil and old parts?

With us — used oil, filters and old components go to proper legal disposal on site. You don't have to transport anything or look for a collection point.

Will a mechanic help if I can't manage?

Yes. If you get stuck, our mechanic will advise or lend a hand, and jobs that need specialist equipment — such as wheel alignment or full diagnostics — are done in the service area next door as a separate service.

How much time should I book for a first visit?

A simple oil or brake pad change usually takes one to two hours, but for a first visit it is worth allowing a little extra. We bill the actual time at the bay, so it is better to have a margin than to rush.

I changed the oil, great service — they lift your car while you run your errands, at half the price of a regular workshop. Recommended.
