A scratch on the door, a chip on the bonnet, or dull paint after years of use — in each case you’ll face the question: paint only the damaged element or the whole car? The answer depends on the extent of damage, the paint’s age, and how much you want to spend. We explain when a spot repair pays off and when it’s only false economy.
What does spot painting involve?
Spot painting is painting a single element or part of it — e.g. one fender, a door, or a bumper. The painter matches the colour to the existing coat and “fades” the transition so the repair is invisible.
Spot painting works when:
- the damage covers one or two elements
- the rest of the paint is in good condition and hasn’t faded
- the car is relatively new and the colour is easy to match
- you want a quick and cheaper repair
When is a full respray the better choice?
A full respray means painting the entire body. It’s more expensive and time-consuming but gives a uniform result across the whole body — with no shade differences between elements.
A full respray makes sense when:
- the paint is badly faded or dull over most of the surface
- the damage is scattered across the whole car
- you want to change the vehicle’s colour
- you’re preparing the car for sale and want a “like new” effect
Old paint is harder to match
The older the car, the more the colour has faded. A spot repair may then differ in shade from the rest of the body.
Comparing cost and durability
Approximate prices in 2026:
- Spot repair of a chip or scratch — from 400 to 1200 zł
- Painting one element — 800–2000 zł
- Full car respray — from 6000 zł upwards
A well-done spot repair is durable
If the element is properly prepped and the colour is mixed to match the specific car, the repair will last as long as the factory coat.
The cheapest option is sometimes the most expensive
A “quick” paint job without surface prep and fading ends in a colour mismatch and the need for corrections.
How to make the decision?
It’s best to start with an inspection
After inspecting the car we can tell whether a spot repair will give an invisible result or whether a full respray is more worthwhile. Without that, any quote is just an estimate.
