A self-service garage is a place where you repair your own car on a professional lift bay — you rent it by the hour and pay only for the time you need. In Wrocław (Grabiszyńska 241) we provide the lifts, tools and space, and you decide how and when you work. In this guide we explain how it works, what you can do yourself, who it pays off for and what it really costs.
What is a self-service (hourly) garage?
It's a 'do-it-yourself' model with access to equipment you usually don't have in your garage. Instead of leaving the car at a shop and paying for labour, you book a lift bay by the hour, drive in and do the work yourself. You pay to rent the bay, not for each task a mechanic does. It's also known as an hourly garage or a garage for rent.
How it works — step by step
- You book a bay online — choose the lift type and number of hours
- You arrive at Grabiszyńska 241 in Wrocław at the agreed time
- You put the car on the lift and do the planned work
- If needed, you get advice from our mechanic on site
- You pay only for the booked time — with no hidden labour rate
What can you do yourself?
- Oil and filter changes (oil, air, cabin, fuel)
- Replacing brake pads and discs
- Seasonal tyre changes and underbody inspection
- Replacing shock absorbers, the muffler or exhaust parts
- Inspecting a car 'from underneath' before buying it used
You don't need your own tools
We provide the lift and basic equipment on site. You just need to know what you want to do — you can bring your own specialist tools, and our mechanic can advise if needed.
What's better left to a pro
Self-service is great for simple, predictable jobs. More serious repairs are better left to a full workshop — they need knowledge, diagnostic equipment and accountability. That includes DPF regeneration, the gearbox, timing system, electronics repair or major suspension work. Here you get both under one roof — if during DIY work you find you need a pro, you just ask for help.
How much does a self-service garage in Wrocław cost?
Approximate bay rates (per hour):
- 3.5 T lift — from PLN 60 / hour
- 5 T lift — from PLN 80 / hour
- Motorcycle bay — from PLN 25 / hour
The cost depends on the bay type and the number of hours booked. You can book several consecutive slots if the repair takes longer. You'll see the current price list and free dates when booking a self-service bay.
You pay for time, not labour
The biggest saving is having no mechanic labour rate. On simple repairs it can cut the cost by several hundred zloty.
How much can you really save?
Example: replacing pads and discs on both axles often costs PLN 300–500 in labour alone at a shop. At a self-service bay you pay only for 1–2 hours of rental and do the work yourself — the difference stays in your pocket. The simpler and more frequent the job (oil, brakes, tyres), the more sense self-service makes.
What to bring and how to prepare
- The parts you want to replace (or buy them beforehand — we'll advise)
- Specialist tools if you have your own (basic ones are on site)
- A work plan — know what you're doing and in what order
- A time buffer — better to book an hour too many than too few
Self-service or a classic workshop?
Self-service pays off when you have the knowledge, time and a simple job to do. Choose a classic workshop for more serious faults, electronics diagnostics or when you want a labour warranty. If you're just starting, begin with the simplest tasks and ask questions — and to understand the equipment itself, see the article how a car lift works.
